Damask rose harvest begins in Firuzabad
TEHRAN – Damask rose harvest has just started in Meymand district of Firuzabad, Fars Province.
Some 600 hectares of farmlands in Meymand have been covered by these fragrant, pink roses. The harvesting period will take one month. When collected, flowers will be processed in rosewater factories. Some 7000 tons of rosewater is extracted from damask roses of Meymand each year. Meanwhile, Meymand exports some 600 tons of rosebuds and dried petals to China, India and Persian Gulf littoral states. Located southwest of Shiraz, Meymand also produces sweetbrier and Avicenna distillates.
Battle against cereal leaf beetles is through in Kordestan
TEHRAN – The battle against weeds and cereal leaf beetles, which had started one month ago in some 70 thousand hectares of wheat lands and gardens of Kordestan Province, is now complete.
Pointing to the cereal leaf beetle as one of the most dangerous wheat pests, an official in the Agricultural Jihad Organization of the western province stated that they utilize standardized tools and methods for killing pests in the farms. Shahsavari said that, so far, the organization has bought 500 various types of spray machines and 60 tankers as well as 160 tons of various poisons, and helps the farmers during the pest-killing periods. There are some 1.11 million hectares of farmlands in Kordestan Province out of which gardens cover 700 hectares.
Dairy complex comes on stream in Nour
TEHRAN – A cooperative company, which will produce and process dairy products, came into operation in Nour, east of Mazandaran Province, on Thursday.
The cooperative and private sectors of the city have totally provided a 4-billion-rial credit for implementation of the project. Shirkameh Factory covers some 2,400 square meters of lands and is expected to bring about some 2,125 tons of dairy products each year. Meanwhile, it has created 28 jobs.
Iran exported $533m of pistachios last year
TEHRAN – The value of Iran’s pistachio exports was put at $533 million last year. Unfavorable climate caused a dramatic fall in the country’s pistachio production capacity (60%) in the period.
However, this year’s output is predicted to be affected by water shortage. The per hectare pistachio output in Iran is less than one ton while it reaches 3 tons per hectare in other countries.
Cotton supply exceeds demands in Iranian markets
TEHRAN – Iran’s cotton output exceeds 130,000 tons with the total demand for it at 115,000 tons.
“So, no more expansion of cotton farms is needed,” said Bahram Nazari, managing director of the union of cotton cooperatives. Iran’s average per-hectare cotton output equals with the world number (2.5 tons per hectare). Varamin cotton is the common brand in the domestic markets.
Big Iran-China trade meeting held in Beijing
TEHRAN – Members of Iran-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry met in Beijing with the board of directors of the Chamber of Iranian Traders in China.
Ways of expanding economic ties between the two countries was top on the agenda in Thursday’s meeting. Meanwhile, they discussed the inclusion of private sectors in the bilateral negotiations.
Iran will soon set about Mashhad-Herat Railway project
TEHRAN – Deputy road minister for railway construction and development said that the Mashhad-Herat Railway project will start as soon as the credit account is opened.
“This railway departs from Torbat Heydariyeh,” Afshar uttered, “Initial studies on the project have already been completed and we’ll soon publish tender documents.”
Iran manufactured over 1.17m TV sets last year
TEHRAN – In the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2005), some 1,175,145 TV sets were manufactured in Iran, corroborating 15.68 percent decrease in comparison with the previous figures.
The number of TV manufacturers also slumped from 14 to 9 companies in the said period. Iran’s main TV manufacturer companies are SAM Electronics, PARS Electric, SANAM, ARYA Electronics and Sirjan Electronics.
